*Note:  The SBIR Coach concentrates on clients who are seriously pursuing a path to Commercialization.  Phase II clients are the heart of our business.  We consider Phase II success the gateway to the Major Leagues, as wealth can only be built by taking your technology to Phase III and beyond.


Planning for your Phase II project begins the moment you are notified that you've won a Phase I award.  Only those who win Phase I awards are eligible for Phase II.  Phase II awards are made at a 40% rate, on average.  But being considered for Phase II is not necessarily automatic.  Many of the Agencies have an "invitation only" policy for Phase II proposals. 

What does it take to get an invitation?  Excellence in your Phase I project:  Execution.  Planning.  Communication.  Providing what your customer really wants.

What does it take to win a Phase II award?  All of the above (even if your invitation to submit a Phase II proposal is automatic) plus a robust and thorough work plan for your proof-of-concept project, and a very convincing Commercialization Plan for taking the technology to end use.  Having a "been there and done that" SBIR Coach to make sure that all of this is clearly presented will give you that competitive advantage that will ensure success.

How important is that Commercialization Plan?  Very important!  The Agencies are being measured on the quality of their award selection process by how much commercialization money derives to their awardees.  They are paying more attention to this now than they have in the past, even to having special reviewers with "Business School credentials" to evaluate the Commercialization Plans.  Having once been the Director of Planning for a Fortune 500 company, guiding the creation of these Commercialization Plans is the SBIR Coach's specialty.

But none of the above will be worth anything if those at the Agency who are monitoring your Phase I work are not convinced that your solution is what they want and need.   The SBIR Coach will be your internal monitor to ensure that you are doing everything necessary to set up your Phase II success.
